The blues guitar world lost a great man in February, 2011 when Gary Moore passed away far too soon at 58.
One of Gary’s finest recordings is his tune called “Still Got The Blues.” It uses a chord progression commonly called a circle of 4ths.
In this video I’ll show you how to play those chords and how to do an arpeggio pattern similar to what Gary does in this tune.
This chord progression is not unique to that song. Europa is another good example, as are a few pop songs I’ve heard over the years… (even disco? just watch 🙂

Quick question . . . D to G a 4th, yep. G to C, yep. C to F, yep.
F to B . . . isn’t a 4th. F to Bb.
Does a Bm7b5 substiture for a Bb?
Quick answer Wayne, it’s in the key of C (no accidentals).
Do you have any lessons on string vibrations through the amp, I have a new hollow body electric, but I get increasing string virbrations from the bottom E and A , I’ve tried different settings but again, not enough knowledge.
Thanks for all your lessons
wow merci!
Thanks, Griff, this is a very nice lesson for a great guitarist lost way too soon. dlt
Griff Please play the song first
The way you show use how to play the cords is great but I need to know what it sounds like
what’s with all the stops &pauses on this video lesson??? very frustrating!!!
I always enjoy these little lessons. Everyone of them adds one more technique that I can incorporate into my playing. I’m getting the lick at the end of Stormy Monday down which is so simple (I didn’t say easy) but sounds so cool. You constantly open new doors. Thanks.
hi griff, thanks for the “still got the blues” lesson. I really enjoy your format, thanks for all the info you give us. You mentioned “Europa” having this same progression changes, will you or do you give a lesson for that song. It is absolutely my all time favorite Santana song. Is the long sustain, which is the trademark of that song, due to Carlos’ incredible abilty and his using an expensive custom guitar? I’m sure a high quality guitar would make a huge difference, but do I stand a chance of ever being able to accomplish such sustain? Keep up the good lessons. i’m sorry i haven’t been able to purchase your dvd course yet, however it is at the top of my wish list, soon as i can afford it. Thanks again, I greatly appreciate you for what you do, you have definitely made me a better player. May God richly bless you!! mm
nicely done, if the video dont work try restarting it.
Gary Moore was also with Thin Lizzy…the ‘Black Rose’
album was a great one..showing his guitar onslaught
capabilities. Thanks for the lesson and bringing to
light a great guitar player…rock or blues. Thanx.
Hi Griff – I’ve been following your site for some time now and find it incredibly useful and helpful. You don’t talk too much by the way – i find you put relevant context around what you’re teaching. Loved the circle of fourths – had heard about it but not quite understood it fully until now.
Please keep up the good work…..and thanks.
I agree with the last comment by Ken. Please play so we know how it should sound before you teach it. Otherwise, excellent work.
Come on Griff give us a special offer on the Blues Guitar Unleashed course as an Easter Present ?? I might just be able to get my beloved to buy it for me instead of an Egg .
Cheers and Happy Easter
Simon
Excellent, thank you Griff
Question: How does he get the notes to sustain like he does in the solo?
Planning to play this with my jam buddies, we have 2 guitarist, it will be perfect.
Now that was real nice.
Thanks
Sal
Wow, two of my top three favorite tunes, the other being Gary’s version of Red House! Thanks for the primer…
Curt
…I couldn’t agree more, Gary Moore did leave us way too soon….but left us with some great music that will live on….”Still Got The Blues”. One of my all time favorites. I’ve been able to pluck out the first few measures but have been struggling with the melody…..Not Anymore! Thanks Griff
Can you PLEASE play it FIRST so we can hear what its supposed to sound like ?
Great Lesson! I had previously figured this one out on my own and your Lesson verified exactly what I charted! Another great tune that may be a circle of 4ths is ” Queen of Hearts” by Greg Allman from Laid Back Album.
Peace!
Marc
I was also hearing Color My World in this pattern.
Hi Griff : Thank You so much for all the help and encouragement with the guitar.Your an inspiration, havce helped tremendously..
All the best to you,. God Bless Ye
Peter
Hey Griff, can you post the tab for this? Thanks, John C.
now we are talking thanx
geronimo
You can make a short lesson ,long and BORING.!!!
Griff I was wondering why you don’t say what notes you are playing instead of saying first finger on the first string on the first fret.
Thanks Griff, great lesson. I am also a member of BGU and have learnt so much from you.
Thanks Tom
Hi Griff.. stumbled accross this in the forum archive.. very nice addition thanks. Looked up the song on you tube too great stuff from gary moore..The solo part reminded me a little of your soloing without scales content but it would be great to have a version of this broken down sometime..maybe in a future course? For now though will enjoy playing this circle of 4ths 🙂
Wow, I enjoyed your neat post.

Hi Griff, I like your videos alot and have learned quite a bit,I only wish you would PLAY what you are going to teach FIRST, so I know how it;s supposed to sound ,then talk about how to play it. thanks Ken
