I Am A Dummy...

So, it was really late, and I've been battling a cold... you get the idea.

I foolishly posted the video yesterday with no TAB at all.... dumb. Here it is.

I also made a couple of downloadable versions:

  • Here's the mp4 version (quicktime/ipod/mac users)
  • Here's the wmv version (windows users)
  • Here's the audio (.mp3) for the final result.

I should have a lot more info and some other new footage for you in a couple of days. Thanks again for all the great comments and emails! If for some reason I didn't write you back personally, I'm sorry. I just got a TON of emails and I might have missed a couple.

    Thanks Griff,
Working on the 4-note solo, I found I was having difficulty syncing with
the chord changes. Also, having some timing issues. I think this lesson will
really help me. I will be working on it diligently.
I am planning to purchase the DVD Course, but I must wait til next
week to order (on a budget...). Looking forward to more lessons...
    Thanks again,
    Dave

  2. Howard

I'm still a NEWBIE but thanks to you I'm learning. Slowly, but learning. What the heck, at age 71 I'm happy to find I can learn anything! Still building calluses (sp?)

  3. David Woods

    Hi Griff,

    Brilliant, thank you.
I don't get to jam with other people very often, work commitments on their part, arthritis on mine.
This is just what I need to keep the juices flowing.

  4. Thanks! You've really opened up doors for me.

  5. Behrooz Yahyazadeh

I'm English man. 67 tomorrow! been a Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters fan all my life. Just started to play the guitar, fender telecaster copy! It's my new life! I would like to see the fret work from a different angle please Sir as my eyes cannot keep up with your fret work. So enjoying your art!

    Muleman, Andalucia, Spain.

  7. ozzy

I live here in Mississippi so you know I love the blues. Thanks, Griff, for helping me learn to play what I love. You are about to turn me into a white Robert Johnson...LOL.

  8. Been playing guitar for 30 years and I never took a lesson or had anyone teach me a song. I love the blues and have always wanted to learn to play just something simple. Your lessons are great, and this tired , worn out disabled viet nam veteran wants to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will try to make you proud. Thanks again AL

  9. Dave D.

Some great ideas here - workin' on 'em...thanks, D

Ooops! You are not the only dummy. LOL. I just saw the link fo rthe tab at the top of this page. So ignore my first reply. My excuse? Blind as a bat. LOL.

  13. Ursula Smith

I meant to add that I really like your lessons. The videos in slow and fast are a great idea! Thank you for taking the time. I played guitar before, but just playing follow-along basic chords. Now, I'm on my way to playing real blues and other music for myself and others.

  14. Ursula Smith

The tab pdf for the '"playing on the porch, part 1" is empty.

  15. Ron Gann

Thanks for making it easy ,your videos are great !!!!!

    Grif

Really enjoying the series. Been trying to play for many years and while I was entertaining myself I never really seemed to get anywhere' Your method of instruction is excellent and straightforward.

Will be buying the DVD's after the first of the year (the wife say's not to spend the money until after christmas).

    Keep up the great work.

  17. OOPs !! forgot i have a Gibson Les Paul.. it sounds closer but lacks whats needed in some ways .. thanks again man... keep on showing your moves ..

  18. hi griff, i am 63 played a few years but always had to carry the rythum for others to sing with..now i am try to do differently but cant get my sons to play rythum long enough for me to start a riff.. shoot fire the main son cant even play rythum.. so maybe i am one up on him.. the guitar is a good intrument and i've been looking for a certain sound that i just cant put my finger on,, i own a 0017 martin from 1952, a fender start VG,, another fender strat from the custom shop, a epiphone acustic. several amps but still cant get that sound and have no way of explaining it.. you are the best of teachers i have seen and your courses are easily understood..
i just get tired of playing rythum..but no one else can or will,, i might add that i can find anyone so far when they start a song, as long as they are in 440 center slot pitch... thx again for yer instructions.. they are appreciated more so than you could imagine..

  19. Hi Griff, I'm 67 years old played a lot of oldie but never got into the blues, I think it takes a special kind of person to play the blues, and I just don't got the feeling I guess. But I'm trying to get to learn by watching you on youtube and I just want to say thanks for the leeks. I've always just followed what the record did and copped it like that and never new how to place it else where if you get my meaning.
    Cesar

  20. steve dunkling

hey Griff, i'm 62 years old, been playing for about 5 years, used to play a little bass back in the 60's(before your day). Not totally sold on blues, but i'll stick with it for a while.Love jazz, wes montgomery etc. VERY ashamed when i record myself. The guitar playing sounds, "dry". old age i guess. Tradgic because you are the best teacher i have had the pleasure listening to. To shorten this,as a guy who is completely "broke" i would buy your materials but i can't. Very madening to finally find a teacher like you with so much to offer and me nothing to give. Hey, maybe some day i'll buy your material. Until then i'll keep on "jammin." Saving all your "freebees" though!! thanks!

  21. james menard

    griff,

thanks for all your knowledge. i ran across your website, don't even know how but am glad i did. ive been playing for about 30 years and thought i was decent after being self taught, you proved me wrong. ive been using the free stuff and have learned so much in three or four free lessons. if a complete new player does not choose your courses, they are a fool. i will invest soon enough.

    thanks again

    james

  22. hi griff, i ordered blues guitar unleashed, but they sent the beginners course . i refused it when the mailman came with it then called your phone number and told the girl that i wanted the intermediate course. i am paitiently waiting but am very excited to get going from what i've seen you are my only hope to really play some blues. i am 74 and have been playing on and off for almost 50 years i'm having a hard time learning but i have faith in you. best regards, jim cannin

  23. cesar vial

thanks a lot nice instructions, the best I ever found.

  24. Thanks Griff, this was a refresher for me and reminded me of good simple licks that really sound good. Since I do play solo most of the time for over 40 yrs now, and the arthritis has diminished my speed, these simple licks add much enjoyment to my playing. I have found that the simplest licks, many times, add much more feeling to a blues song than a cascade of numerous licks, IMHO. Really enjoy your style of instruction and thanks again.

  25. Wilson LaGraize

Best guitar instruction on the internet.
    Thanks,
    Wilson

  26. Barry Ruhl

Thanks for these little riffs that you put out into the ether. I really enjoy them.

  27. mteo

Now I jump with my two feet in to the blues
    Happy father day
    Thank you Griff

  28. Mike Blaisdell

Hello Griff, Thanks for all of your time and for sharing. I get a real good feeling that I just might be able to play sometime soon and that makes me very happy as I have been strugglin for years trying to learn on my own. You are a blessing to many of us. I put in my vote every day, Good luck. Blaze

  29. Mike Blaisdell

Hi, I would like to know more about this payment plan. I'm an old fart on a fixed income and I am bound and determined to be able to play before I die. If anyone can give me some info on the payment plan please e mail me at blaze49@megalink.net . Thanks to all and have a good week end. Don't forget to vote for Griff.

  30. Al Evangelista

Thank you for the time and effort you make to teach about what you and I love: the blues.

  31. Hi Griff,
Love your work. I have played guitar since I was 11 years old and still have learnt a lot from your tapes.
    Keep it up.
    Best wishes.
    Mike Webb
    Frankston, Vic Australia.

  32. Hi Griff
Dean here again and I may be the dumb one. Just spent 20 minutes tabbing the porch myself and looked on the update and found you had done it. THANKS again. I'm telling anyone that listens to buy your Videos. That is if they want to keep up with my crazy skills. Ha Ha Ha

  33. Never mind, I found it!

  34. Ron Lock

    Hi Griff,

Great stuff you're doing and your methods make everything so much clearer. I have been playing (trying to play!) for about 3 years now & having lessons for the last 18months learning some- Music Theory, Scales, Chords etc.. While I'm sure the lessons will do me good in the long run, I'm not too sure what I'm supposed to do with everything that I've been taught. Your Videos/Tabs have given me a serious nudge in the right direction to the point that coupled with everything I have learnt, it's as though you have switched a light on and I can't thank you enough for that.
I have an RGT exam in about 2 weeks time-gulp! and once that is done I am planning to invest in one of your courses, not sure if it will be 'Blues Guitar Unleashed' or 'Playing Through the Blues', haven't decided yet which one would better suit my abilities.

Keep up the fantastic work! & thanks again

    Ron.

  42. David Vorster

Hi Giff Its been fantastic to get to grips with some blues playing using your easy and informative method of teaching. I have been a bass player virtually all my music career starting way back in 1964 at a very young age. I have been privileged to been exposed to the real world of incredible legacy of fine music artist from the 50's to the present day. I have until recently even been involved with the Shadows / Cliff club of South Africa just to play with some of our original and talented local artist from our early years. I enjoy the blues very much and will look forward to every bit of info from you. Could you link me to your site on where I might get access your DVD's sales.
    Many Thanks
    David Vorster

  43. Ian Wallace

    Hey Griff
    Thanks for the e/mail.
I have a question, I recently bought a fender start guitar outfit that came with a sp 10 watt amplifier, but for the life of me i cant seam to get that bluesy sound on it. Any advice ?.
    Thanks

    Ian Wallace

  44. Walter

    Thanks Griff,

I'm really digging these lessons . . . I am pretty new to your site, and am impressed. You have a terrific manner in teaching . . . one of the best I have encountered. Looking forward to future fun.

    Thanks for all the data!
    - Walter

  45. Hey Griff,

Thanks for the lessons. I appreciate the help. Quite a BB King flavour to the 4-note solo. BB loves that box position, and boy does he know how to milk it!

Because your videos are in mp4 format, I could sync them to my iPhone and carry the lesson round with me. Very cool. You might want to mention this on your site, so iPhone and iPod Touch users are made aware of it.

    Thanks again, and regards.
    Karl

  47. Andy Bacon

    Brilliant! Loved it!

    Thanks Griff.

  48. Laura

    Hey Griff

I have to say that was a great video with the tabs. I am on disability which makes it hard to order lessons on line, but you doing these videos have made it so much easier for me!!

I love the blues and you make it easy to follow!

Thanking you so much for the good work.

    Laura

  49. Christian

    Hi Griff,

Thank you for everything you are putting online for free - you are great.

    Like the way you teach.

    Kind regards,

    Christian

  50. Richard

This is wonderful, just getting into blues and this is a great way to start.
    Thanks again!

  51. Chris

Great to find a teaching method that actually shows you how to play what you are supposed to be seeing. There are a number of shredders out there who try to impress with their speed. Most of that is useless.

I am mainly, an acoustic player, and it is interesting to see how well you have broken these simple, but effective licks. Keep up the good work. I would hope that you have a complete course available. If so, please advise.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  52. Ronnie Joseph

    Hi,
I enjoyed both the 4note solo and now this. Thanks
    Ronnie Joseph

  53. Michael Warren

I recently retired and am trying to learn to play the guitar. I like the simplicity of the two lessons I have viewed, two notes and the back porch. Simple is good, it makes learning more fun and gives you a sense of accomplishment and a desire to learn and play more. Your approach to teaching is very good.
    Michael Warren

  54. Charles

    Great Job, Griff!!!

Really enjoyed the front porch riff ideas!

  55. Bruce

Just great Griff, thanks a lot. I recently began your PTTB course and I'm finally getting somewhere and enjoying it immensely. These little extras are icing on the very valuable cake you've cooked up.

  56. brady browning

griff i love your course i am 70 years old you gave me a new interest in life on the guitar and i think you very much
    thanks for every thing brady

  57. Les Jones

    Yes at last!!!!
You have just done what I have been looking for.Showing & explaing how each chord & brake down of the notes & how they fit togeather.
You see I have aways wanted to play a guitar not solo/rythem but both togeather & blues is something that comes from deep inside that everyone has the beat, mom's hart beat when you are in her stomch at the beging
of life/a comfort, safe worm loving zone.
This is great & when this course comes on line I will get one. Will this be on DVD/CD & when?

    Thank You Les Jones

  58. Thanks for all the great input and comments! I'm sorry I haven't been able to read them and write back for the past few days, but it's fun now.

If you're having trouble with the pdf files, you probably need the newest adobe reader which you can download from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader

I'm working on some more stuff... it'll be out in the next few days. Thanks again.

    Griff

  59. J.Rex

    Griff,
Load the cable in the bag first -- then your laptop!
Didn't miss the Tab, I have to transpose it to use with my tuning.
So notation works for me. Can't really use the videos for same reason, but do enjoy watching them.
I have Verizon with their new USB modem, works practically any place in the USA.

    J.Rex

  60. Rick Saylor

    come on!!!!
How much?? Who cares I`ve got to have it!!This stuff is Amazing Fantastic it is even fun. Please let me know when it goes on Sale!!!!

  61. Hi Griff,
Mighty material you're putting out. Finally getting instruction on how to play! Most material is strong on theory, scales etc which is good but at the end of it all no instruction on how to use it. Sadly the tab for some reason wouldn't download. Be great if you could send it again.
    Cheers
    Einar

  62. Jim

I live in Australia. I really liked that 4 note solo, all I have to do now is learn how to play it.

  63. butch

Griff. Thank's for the video and the riffs, I can start working on them and hopefully put them to work.Butch,

  64. Daniel Ryczek

    Griff,
This Great Stuff!! Man, even I can do this! PTTB
was good...but this makes it a lot easier! Thanks for the heads up on RM Pro too...what a tool! If I can do this...anyone can.
    Daniel

  65. Dennis

    Hay Griff,
Thanks for the follow up e mail with the tab. Part of the fun for me was figureing out the tab for myself. Though, this was alot easier.
    Great stuff,
    Dennis

  66. Rich

This lesson is really been keeping me going. Such a great combination of skills: rhythm, riffs, putting it all together. How about some more in other keys?

  67. John

Many thanks for the Tabs, I started learning at age 54 last December, purchased PTTB and actually feel I am making progress (but still struggling with Barre Chords.

PTTB has been loads of help and the Circle of Fifths guide worked !!

    John,
    United Kingdom.

  68. Hi Griff and Gang, Heath Here from Riffmaster pro .
I noticed some of the comment above about riffmaster pro and possibly a video version, Well i don't want to let the cat out of the bag to early but we will have a video version out very soon, we've been working on it for a while now. I'll let Griff know when its ready to go and he can post pt on the blog.

    Regards
    Heath

  69. There's a program called The Amazing Slow Downer that you can get for Mac. You can find it at http://www.ronimusic.com/. I don't have anything to do with Riffmaster Pro development, I just know Heath, the creator of the program. I'll shoot him an email about our wish list.

  70. Mike

Having had PTTB for some time and your continuing updates, I need to thank you for your insight and enthusiasm. I had Riffmaster Pro and this may be the #1 teaching aid ever! I say had however because my old pc is no more. I now have an Imac, which I very much enjoy for it's musical abilities, but alas no Riffmaster! Can I hope for a Mac friendly version soon?
    Holding my breath. Thanx, Mike

  71. Alan

Thanks Griff I actually spent a bit of time whilst watching the video and coppied down the tabs probably not as good as what you supply but good enough for me to understand. It could worth thinking about a lesson for those who dont know how to do this,as it tends to make you think about it a little diferently. Thanks again Alan.

  72. Quick update, I added the .mp3 file for those of you who asked for it. Great idea to use Riffmaster Pro on that. And yes, it would be VERY cool if there was a video version of Riffmaster Pro.

  73. Antonio

Hey Griff thats fantastic, I think if I study this lessons I will start to understand how blues are made of, and the leads over a chord, thats great Griff thankyou Antonio

  74. Antonio

Hey Griff thats fantastic, I think if I study this lessons I will start to understand how blues are made of, and the leads over a chord, thats great Griff thanyou Antonio

  75. TOM

thanks Griff, this is getting me motivated again

  76. Hey Griff, hope you feel better soon.i'm so thankful for you brother, you make it so interesting and easy dude. thank you caring enough to make it easy for us beginners and to keep giving us all this extra stuff man i'm so glad to have hooked up with your website. take care and God Bless you and your family .

  77. Griff,

    I got it.
I didn't thing Riffmaster would load the video, but I tried to load it using ALL FILES and it loaded it.
Now if they will add the ability to choose a video file, that would be Great.
Or how about build a VideoRiffmaster as a separate program, so the original program Riffmaster does not get to huge and hard to use.
Although, people probably have already asked for this.

    George

  78. Mark

    Great job Griff, as allways
    Peace...mc

  79. Griff,

You're the best! Finally someone who actually teaches you to play the blues, and not just memorize a few simple etudes. I'm glad I bought your course and that you're producing this blog. I've learned more from you than I have from years of personal lessons. Keep up the great work!

  80. Griff,
    Thanks for the video.
I bought Riffmaster per your recommendation, and would like to be able to use it on the end of the “Playing on the Porch” video, where you play the whole 12 bar Blues. Is there any way in your future lessons that you can (also) upload the audio files to your video’s, so that we can load them into Riffmaster?
Also, adding the audio files to the lesson’s on the New DVD’s your making would be Great for those of us with Riffmaster.
In case anyone is wondering, I looked for the (audio file only) but only the video file is loaded into my computer.
Does anyone know if there is a product like Riffmaster, for using on Griff’s video files and the upcoming DVD’s?
It would be Great to be able to take a section of video, slow it down to whatever speed I would like and then loop it to watch the fingering of a riff or chords over and over until I am sure I know what is going on.
    Thanks Again,
    GOD Bless You All,
    George

  81. David

Hi Griff, Actually it probably wasn't such a dumb thing that you did posting the lesson with out the tab. I had to use my ears a little more on that one so it was a good thing but I can't say that I didn't think to myself,"where's the tab" it would be alot easier if I had it. But I think it's good to sometimes do things a little different. Anyway, I really liked the lesson. Thanks!

  82. Bryan

    Hi Griff
Thanks for the second email with TAB.
I had viewed the first and was writing down tab from the video, but yours is much better.
I have been working my way through PTTB lessons and this is a great addition.
Will you be discounting the DVD purchase for those of us that have already purchased PTTB course? Anyway great stuff, and thanks again
    Bryan

  83. Bill Burrows

Thanks Griff This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for ,a way of playing the blues for fun . I hope you have more stuff like playing on the porch its just what I need
    Bill from Australia .

  84. MannyC

    Hi Griff
There are a lot of people selling guitar courses but you really make guitar learning fun
Great lesson - where's my cheap guitar!
    Lucille's maid get over here!

  85. Hal

    Thanks! It's really good stuff.

  86. Jean-Marc

Thanks Griff it is very great.

    Jean-Marc

  87. steve

    Thanks for the tabs Griff.
    Steve

  88. Tony

    Griff,

Thanks for the tab for the video from your new DVD. It makes things a little easier for us mere mortals. I've had great fun with it now I've had the chance for a proper play, as I'm sure everybody has. I had a friend round last night who is a very good guitarist and he was well impressed with it. He even played along with some harmony stuff (which I know isn't what you intended but hey! it all adds to the fun) and we spent ages just trying things out. That's the beauty of your whole course. Everything fits together and you ecourage us all to try new things. It's great fun so a really big thank you. Keep it up Griff. Guitar is so much more fun now.

    Tony

  89. thats ok griff, i wrote the link to my website down wrong. It's not Twinsoil2 it's twinsoul2. Yikes.
