Cross Cut Saw in A

Well played solo Jim… an interesting choice for VJR backing track… I like your style. I had to dig out my copy of “Born Under a Bad Sign” to check out how Albert King player the original. If I’m going to jump in on this one I need to practice… a lot.

Well, SHarpo, I don't know about "my style". :)
I just fumbled around with this one for a half hour or so, found some stuff that kinda seemed to work, got tired, and went with it.  Could probably do a lot better if I hammered at it for a couple days, but in here I try to pretend I'm at a jam and some turkey starts playing a tune I'm not familiar with and I have to just cross my fingers and go for it.  So my "stuff" gets posted complete with brain farts, missed notes, and all my dirty underwear hanging out.  I took a half hour or so with this one because my first attempts were more dirty underwear than anything else.  That "rhumba" thing or whatever the hell it is that it has going throws a bit of a curve ball at you.

48 bars is a lot of wallowing!  Interesting track.  I'll wait and go after DB and SHarpo....
Well, you don't have to take 48 bars just because I pigged out.   ;D
Jump on in, the mud is fine!  Just imagine Elmo Blues doing the rhumba, get in that groove, and you'll do just fine!  ;)

I will not have time to hit this one for a few days....heading to lake to drink and rot for the weekend.  No internet, no electronics.
Y'all have fun now, hear!

No pigging around here.  You said a little deceptive at first?  Ha, well, it'll take magic to get into that groove.

Well, you survived that one pretty good, Dan, and got to practice your swearing.
Griff says to count out loud ... not swear out loud.  :)

Had a few takes and was torn which to post. Each had a part I liked and other parts not so much.  The changes move by pretty quick and was trying to hear them.  Forced me out of using licks I've learned and just faking it.  I like the rhythm but can't keep up with the tempo for any length of time.  I'll get there.

Dan… just thinking out loud here, but if you listen to the original version of Crosscut Saw by Albert King he plays a more sparse style where the spacing adds to the licks over all impact… I guess this is what Marv call's breathing… some times less is more.

You're right. At times i was trying to do that but would then get caught up in it and be off and running.  I'll have to check out that recording.

I just re-read my post… and it’s kind of ambiguous as to my intent. It was not intended in any way to be a subtitle critical critique of your playing… so please don’t think that. It was more like mentally posing the question “what if I experimented with this style… what would I get.”

Oh, no, I didn't take it that way but I do need another way of approaching songs like that.  I also have a real hard time hearing the changes in that track.  I can just about make out the first 8 bars but after that it's a blur.  Need to get it more down by feel.

Here is where I got that backing track from.

And here are several of Albert King playing it.

As you can see, there is little similarity.

Also, it's a different "feel" than a standard 12-bar blues.  After the V-IV-I turnaround it never returns to the V chord ... it just "hangs" for a while on the I chord then starts another 12 bars still on the I chord.

uh huh, yeah, you see!  I didn't trust my ears. I kept thinking that they'/re staying in the I for an aweful long time but another part of my brain was saying, no, you just have to listen more carefully. So glad you said that Jim.
