I just heard that bass guitarist extraordinaire, Tim Bogert passed away today after a long battle with cancer. Tim first came to prominence as the bass guitarist and co-lead vocalist for late 60's band Vanilla Fudge. Following that, Tim and former VF drummer Carmine Appice formed Cactus with former Mitch Ryder guitars Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day. Later Bogert and Appice joined forces with Jeff Beck as Beck, Bogert and Appice. I was amazed at the intricate bass lines he played and was able to sing while doing them.

Tim's bass style was unique and instantly recognizable. Listening to his early work with Vanilla Fudge is what gave me such an interest in bass guitar and changed how I listened to music.

I never met him face-to-face, but had the pleasure of a couple online conversations with him several years ago. Rest in peace, Tim!
