Studio One Studio One - How Layers Work

Good reminder!
I dabbled in this years ago and completely forgot about how it works.

I'm still just floating across the surface in S1, slowly but surely I'm going a little deeper every day.

I've always recorded to layers. It makes comping so easy. There's a way to have studio one automatically record takes to layers in the top menu bar, in the audio tab I think. Check that and never worry about clicking track inspector. It also works for midi, making it easy to edit my hack played keyboard and percussion bits from layers.

Yup, it’s takes to layers tick box. I don’t remember, but think it is in inspector after you enable/create layers.

In Pro Tools, they are called playlists, and my default setting is to have Pro Tools automatically create playlists when loop recording.

What’s interesting is that I find whether it is me that I am recording or someone else, typically the second or third take is the best overall performance.

I’ve also learned years ago to record everything. Even a cold run through, or part rehearsal has held some amazing results.
