Excercise 8.4 Big E5

I'm struggling with the big E5 in this excercise. I can't really hear a massive amount of difference in sound between this and a standard E5. Is there any time where a standard E5 wouldn't work and the big E5 would have to be used? If not I think I will play this with the standard E5 and give the big version a miss.

There's no difference in quality or function.

The difference in sound is in "fullness".

Griff is the first person I've found who teaches power chords with the doubled root, i.e. 3 notes using 3 strings.

In the past I've only seen 2 notes, root and 5th using just 2 strings..

Doubling the root will be a "fuller" sound.


The Giant E5 not only doubles the root but doubles it 2 more times = 4.

It also double the 5th.

4 E's and 2 B's.

A lot fuller than just 1 of each using just 2 strings.

Usage depends on the sound you want.


Same with any chord.

You can play a triad with just 3 strings.

Or double up some notes and use all 6 strings.

And add in a bass and keyboard and horns and back-up singers and the entire Morman Tabernacle choir, all playing/singing notes of the triad.

It's still just a triad.

But the sound gets bigger and bigger.

Just ask Phil Spector.

But you'll need to get a Visitor's Pass.

I think I will play this with the standard E5 and give the big version a miss.
If not wanting to use the Giant E5, you could move on to the Open E5 on page 43, which uses the Open E Major shape while muting out the 3rd.

Kind of in between the Standard and Giant.

I maybe wasn't quite specific. As this is a lesson on open power chords by standard E5 I meant the open E5 (open E with 3rd string muted).

That is the one I am going with. Already up to 75% speed. With the big E5 I can't even do the change at 50%.
