Scale changes

If I play a lead to a song in the key of 'E' and the chords change to 'G' should the notes in my lead change from the E scale to the G scale? This is not a 12 bar blues song but a rock song. I guess what I'm asking is should the scale change when the chord changes.

Something you may want to try and already be familiar with from the blues is play E major pentatonic over the E and E minor pentatonic (same as G major pentatonic) over the G. That would be common in a rock song
