I would appreciate a short discussion on counting. I have been working on the 4 note solo and the beginning is confusing to me. Is the dotted quarter rest counted as a triplet which would in turn mean the solo starts on beat 2? Then that would mean that bar 4 starts on beat 3. And bar 3 would end on the uh of beat 2.

A dotted quarter note is the equivalent of 3 eight's notes, whether it's an actual "note" or a rest. So, yes, if counting 12/8 time as if it was 4/4 triplet time, the solo starts on "beat 2." Bar 4 starts on "beat 3" as you say and bar 3 ends at the completion of beat 2 (or the "uh") as you say. You seem to have it handled. Good job.
