The idea behind today’s lesson is simple… you walk into a music and pull a guitar off the wall, what do you play?

Doesn’t matter if it’s acoustic or electric, and doesn’t matter if you have a pick in your pocket or now – you should be able to play a little something.

Of course, this is going to use a bunch of little things from Blues Guitar Unleashed, so there’s a nice side benefit of seeing some of your lessons in action (unless you don’t have Blues Guitar Unleashed… and then you should get it, of course.)

Yep... I even tabbed the whole thing out note for note for you. Enjoy!

I love lessons like this. Thanks Griff.

    • John

I suppose you need to either mute the G string and the B string on the two first chord grips. Or just pick the 4th (D) and second (B) strings and the third (G) and first (E) strings during the slide. True?

    • Tony

Hi Griff, just thought to drop a note to say that I really love the course. I’m about an intermediate guitar player and can follow along with the music theory and can play the tabs on the stuff that’s to my liking. I really appreciate printing out the tabs material and then I’m off to my guitar and music land.

      Keep up the good work
      Tony

Awesome stuff Griff! No more Stairway To Heaven for me…I’ve found many stores that have a funny sign prohibiting Stairway because they hear it so much.

Really like the groove of this.

    • Andy

Thank you for sharing, Griff. Some great ideas in this, yet simple enough to be accessible. You are an amazing teacher and good friend to all who seek to play.

    • Brian Goewey

That was great ! Very generous to share that video. I especially like that you counted which is essential for any musician although many of us resist the discipline that it requires. Cheers!

    • Corky

Great and very fun stuff to play and relax too. Thanks Griff for the lesson. I have a grandson I’m excited to teach this to.

    • Fernando

      Best shirt so far…

    • tony

kinda like stormy monday intro but not of course . i have seen you do the stormy monday slide and you can put that together i think. i will mess with both. i have tried to master the tune for years . i have my own way of doing some of it so this should add some spice to what i do Thanks for this one.

    • Michael Quillen

      Very cool, thx Griff!

    • Eddie

As always a great lesson. Thanks for the new ideas.

      Griff,

I’m an all pass member and enjoying every bit of it.
I attended a blues guitar camp in Mississippi two years ago and I’m returning this summer. I’m also attending a guitar camp in Memphis this summer. Three years ago I attended a blues/folk guitar camp in Colorado. They are fun, informative and I meet so many nice people from around the country. They’re usually 4-7 days and some include an evening trip to a local venue. Have you ever thought about conducting a similar camp? I would be first in line to participate. Anyone else know of other blues guitar camps?
Thanks always for your incredible lessons.
      Chas

    • Lawrence

Thanks Griff, love this one as I usually play a fingerpicked version of Stormy Monday when I try out a new guitar using a GM7/C9/Am7/Bm7/A#m7/Cm7 etc progression. Now I have a lot more ideas next time I’m in the store.

    • Mark d.

Another great example of your generosity! Thanks again! You da man😎👍👍

      Hi Griff,
This is another very cool lesson which I have saved for later under Music Store Blues. I already loved your previous Music Store Blues back in 2016 of How to Fish in C which until now is what I usually play when in a music store. So I am looking forward to learning this new version.

        Hi Griff & Michael,
Can you please post a link to the How to Fish in C video & any other “guitar store blues”?

And thanks, Griff. It’s always great to have a tasty little blues tune in your pocket to play in a store where there’s some little shredder doing his showoff thing & not having to compete. Also really nice to use some of my BGU 2.0 in context. Thanks again!

    • Dave in the Adirondacks

      Hey Griff,
Thanks once again. Excellent piece to practice hybrid picking on as well 4 sure.
      Peace,
      Dave

    • Ian Robins

      Sweet run, Griff. Many thanks!

    • daniel

      Amazing as alway!

    • jean dominique

      Lovely. Simple … What a musician mind….Thank you….

    • Steve

Great stuff Griff sure a lot better than sitting (or standing) there trying to come up with something you won’t screw up with everyone in the store listening. Thanks

    • Kevin O'Sullivan

Sweet Griff – really sweet. Thank you so much

    • PaPathor

      Hey Griff,

Have you ever considered putting a donation button on the page if you do this type of lesson, I consider this to be way over generous to tab and teach a 12 bar blues original for nothing, there are plenty who follow you that appreciate the value of this type of lesson and can afford a wee buck or two towards your IT costs…………………just saying.

      • David L.... in Oxford, England....

Just reinforcing what has been said previously….

Griff…. I buy a lot of your BGU materials and, even so, would be happy to chip in a £ or two now and again to help support your project….. and maybe help fund it so that others less fortunate than I can continue to benefit from your wonderful work.

Thanks Griff…. long may you prosper…..

        Great idea. 👍🏻 💡.

    • Mike

Do appreciate you taking the time to show this to us.

    • Scott R

Maybe this can become a series of “Guitar Store Songs”
Next up (I hope) is Music Store SRV style shuffle, followed by Music Store AC/DC style rocker.
      Love it…

      • Skinny Fingers Bob

Here is another suggestion for the series.
While working thorough the BGU Acoustic Book, I finally came to House of the Rising Sun. Yes, you presented the chord progression nicely, however that lesson was a world-class disappointment. When I saw the title, I was secretly hoping for the Animal’s version with a
a template version of the organ solo.
How about a couple of different versions of House of the Rising Sun done in different styles, such as :
Animals – with an easy to transpose / relocate organ solo
        Ventures
and if Paul Butterfield Blues Band performed the song……..

        Thanks Folks.

    • Pat

Thank you Griff. I really enjoy and appreciate the full 12 bar lessons. I can build off this and jam with my buddy on harp.

    • jim

I really like this lesson. Very cool, I will learn it today for sure. Thanks so much for this.

    • Arizona Mando

Thanks much for this one Griff. A really great little tune that sounds great all by itself. I love it when you put out a lesson that goes all the way through a full twelve bars. Much appreciated!!!!

    • Jim

Cool lesson! You covered tons of ground with one “little” lesson.
I had a quick idea run through my head when I saw the title “Music Store…”
Why not write a real guitar testing “song” and demonstrate how a person actually should evaluate a new guitar!
I started thinking of the neck, the pickups, the tone, etc. and thought, we all make fun of “stairway to heaven,” but what should we be playing when checking out a guitar?! I would imagine it should cover the whole neck, and all the pickups – at a minimum.
Thanks for another cool lesson – and I look forward to your “Guitar Test Song” video!

      • Scott R

I love this idea…. good suggestion.

    • Chris Roper

Yo! Nuvver great lesson….thanks. Thing that bothers me….about me….is if the shiny new guitar doesn’t have Extra Slinky strings, I’m gonna struggle.
      OK, OK….I’ll struggle!!

      All the best,

      Chris Roper.

    • Memphis Matt

When I signed up for Playing on the Porch, I was just hoping to give myself a jump start. I’d didn’t realize that small step would lead to an incredible opportunity to learn a great deal more.

These videos go way beyond the confines of what I experienced as a guitar student taking lessons ages ago.

      Many thanks.

    • Dave Flood

Thanks Griff, Brilliant. You should arrange for a brochure with tab and notation to hand out at some well known centers to proved an alternative to “Stairway to Heaven”. A good promotion campaign for you.

    • Eel1948

Why do you refer to it as a G9 when there is no A in the chord?

      • Griff

Only because that is the chord I picture in my mind to pull the 2nd and 4th strings from. G7 would also work.

        • Eel1948

Thanks for your reply I get ya, I wish there was a nice G 9 down there!

    • Bryan Merry

      Brilliant I loved this !!
      Thanks Griff

    • JimJ

A fine lesson~! Thank you, Griff. Learning Blues is fun with you. I’ve got BGU and I am enjoying every lesson. Down-loading the email videos adds to the fun. JimJ 2/21/18

Slow Blues and morning coffee. I can never get enough of this.
