Believe it or not, G&L does not stand for “Griff & Laura,” though it’s a striking coincidence… especially considering Leo’s old haunt is mere minutes from my home in Corona (they’re still on Fender Ave. in Fullerton.)

And luckily, they occasionally ask me to try stuff out and they make videos.

Well that happened last week with this brand new model, the Doheny. I have to say, this is absolutely not a guitar I would have chosen for myself, but after an hour or 2 with it I was hooked. It’s got incredible tone and the playability is off the charts. And as I’ve gotten to the know the people at G&L over the last couple of years I’ve grown to really like what they’re trying to do.

So, sit back and grab a coffee or something, and check out this great new guitar I’m now lusting over 🙂

I’ve just put my money down one of these. I tried out a number of high end options and hadn’t been looking for an offset style guitar but the Custom Doheny blew me away. The comment about tone change between pickup selections with no volume impact was spot on.

Been playing a G&L Superhawk (1985) forever. Fit; finish from Fullerton is better than any guitar I’ve played. Keep doing what you do G&L!

Despite your great demo and description I thought that the guitar sounded “tinny” on all settings.

I USE TO MAKE MY OWN CUSTOM ELECTRIC GUITARS NO KITS, JUST BOUGHT NECKS. THERE CALLED “DRAGONFIRE”!
I WAS MAKING THEM IN THE LATE 90’S TELL I FOUND A KIT MADE ONE SAYING, DRAGONFIRE. I SUED THE GUY. ALL MINE WHERE MADE FROM SCRATCH. I USED G&L PICKUPS ON MOST. BUT THEN I WOULD USE THE NOISELESS FENDER PICKUPS. , OR THE HOT JEFF BECK ONES.
YOU GUITAR LOOKS LIKE THE OLD FENDER FIRE BIRDS. HARD TO REALLY TELL THE GREAT SOUND WITH THE ROOM REVERB. IT DID SOUND GREAT. I MADE A CEDAR TOP, CHAMBERED BODY AND THE THE NECKS THAT SCREWED IN, I WOULD USE AIRCRAFT THREADED INSERTS AND USED A RELEASE AGENT AND GLUED THEM TOGETHER ON THE NECK. THE BOLT IN AND GLUING MADE FOR GREAT SUSTAIN AND A MELLOW SOUND. I ALWAYS SAW THAT G&L LOGO ON YOUR STRAT COPY’S. GREAT GUITAR GRIFF HAVE FUN BRO.

Love the sound, but I will never understand the single tone control. Odd shape reminds me of a really cheap guitar I saw in the sixties… but that one had a neck that was closer in size to a tree trunk.

I never got the concept of restricting a player by having one tone for both pickups. I don’t see any advantage to this at all except that it saves the manufacturer a few bucks. This is a nice sounding guitar, but it has a bad name and ugly shape.

      • Griff

Personally, I love it and don’t find it restrictive at all. I have my Les Paul’s rewired with a master volume and tone control typically so that I don’t have to search for which control I want while singing. And with my strats, I have the lower tone wired to the bridge pickup and it’s the only one I ever use. But hey, to each their own!

I used to own a guitar that sounded very similar to that one, even had the same body shape. It was a 60s model that I got back when I was in my thirties and it had the exact same tone but I never could find out what type of guitar it was but I know it had to be in the late 60s maybe early 70s not sure but that is a great sounding guitar and I would love to have one! I like the word vintage.. but I will have to browse the prices. Oh and thanks Griff for helping me find the tone I was looking for and showing us those great licks,I learned a lot! Have a great day.

As your intro email stated, “…hey, it’s Sunday and it’ll but a fun way to spend some time this morning.” You were absolutely right – that was fun to watch and [maybe more so] to hear. I’m an acoustic guitar picker (learning how to be, anyway) but that demo sure makes me want to consider other options along the way. Thank you for sharing that demo.
