Today’s video is based on a request for a video about how to play Peter Green’s “Need Your Love So Bad.” So I checked it out and I really like how it’s an 8 bar form with a bridge.

It made a good lesson so here you go… enjoy!

Download the video – MP4 | WMV

Download the chord chart – PDF

And in case you want to hear the video I got this tune from it’s here.

      Like this lesson very much,Thanks

    • Chris Hutchison.

It was 1966 and I was on another regular visit to The Marquee club.
      I didn’t know the group.
I stood three feet from Peter Green.
I can still feel the near hysteria when he played Dust My Blues from the Hard Road album.
      Always remembered,never forgotten!
      Thankyou Griff.

      The video won’t download

One of my all time Peter Green favorites. Love the structure of the song. In particular using the F#m and Bm (6th and 2nd of the key).

Peter Green plays lead. Danny Kirwin plays the guitar rhythm.

    • Erick Blackwelder

Fun tune! I will digest it, polish it, and take it to the next neighborhood blues jam.

Again, I tip my hat to you, Griff.

    • Martin

Gary Moore – great technique, too many notes, too loud. Peter Green – great technique, just enough notes, plenty of spaces – fantastic. I read he was a big fan of Hank Marvin of the Shadows in his youth – this really comes out in “Albatross”. Thanks for this Griff – one of my all-time favourites.

    • Chris

Sorry for the typing errors. Supposed to be “5th string” and then “Add” a little blues lick.

    • Chris

I love this song. There is a great ending they did on a live version of the song. I found it on iTunes. It walks down from A to G to F#M, then drops to the 5th strong with a B and walks back up C#, D, D#, then E. Ass a little blues lick and end on A.

    • Ron Underwood

What is the model of the guitar in this video ?

      • Carl Richardson

That’s a G&L (George Fullerton & Leo Fender) ASAT Telecaster- Great guitar and an upgrade from a Fender . Leo Fender started a new guitar R&D + manufacturing company in Corona, Caifornia after he sold Fender Guitars to CBS. I couldn’t tell if it was the “Tribute” version made in Indonesia- excellent value.

        • JohnnyB

I really doubt Griff is playing a Tribute…

    • Pete

I saw Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac in the upper room of the Railway Hotel in West Hampstead, London in early ’68. I got there early and was standing up on the front row about 2 yards from Peter Green. It was a very small stage and not very high. I was mesmerised and will never forget it. Probably the best live music I ever saw. I walked out of there on cloud nine and have been trying to explain just how good he was live ever since. BB KIng, no less, said of him at the time, “he’s the one British guy who makes me break out in a cold sweat”. Kind of says it all.

In the first bar of Peter’s singing I thought I heard the gospel song Precious Lord Take My Hand. For me, at least, lyrics really tie a ribbon around a song structurally. This arrangement is terrific over Precious Lord lyrics. I was worried looking at all those changes but they all fit perfectly when I’m humming or singing. Thank you! And best of everything for your kids. My boy is starting college next month, too.

      Hey Griff,
When I went to save the lesson & Tab I found that I had already seen it back Sept 2017 but what a great refresher now that I have advanced since back then and actually understood the lesson much better. I have in fact already started to play some songs with same structure using percussion effects.

      All good thanks

    • Rick Stoner

Agree, I looked up diminished chord and was easier to play once I understood what I was doing. Great lesson

    • ChrisGSP

Hi Griff. Not sure if I’ve made this comment on some earlier posting, but maybe you should have entitled the lesson “8-bar blues with a bridge AND A DIMINISHED CHORD”!.
You’ve said yourself that Diminished chords are quite rarely heard anywhere other than Jazz, it’s worth making that statement up front so that people can see it and then see how to play it and how it works.
You said Kyle is going to college in Texas – UT? If Austin Campus then Antone’s for infusions of Blues.
Cheers from the Great South Island of OZ.
      Chris G.

      • ChrisGSP

Griff, sorry I guess Kyle isn’t old enough for Antone’s (liquor license)? Maybe his Dad would have to go instead?

      • Derek Aussie Johnson

I feel embarrassed as an Aussie when some one tries to puff their chest out and avail us of there of musical knowledge in such a smug I know everything manner,we are all here to learn not big note ourselves.Griff has a very detailed method of teaching .Maybe if you have made this comment before you don’t need to be her other than to boost your own ego

    • Hector Desimone

Great song and super instructional video! You are awesome.

    • Dudley Gibbs

      Brilliant piece and tuition….thanks Griff.
I`ll have to start working on this one.

Always a treat learning whatever you have to show us. BTW, if you’re not familiar with Michigan, your kid will love it. I was writer-in-residence for ten weeks one long winter at Interlochen Arts Academy, first time i had seen black squirrels and it snowed every single day of the ten weeks, first truly winter culture I’d lived in. Great area. I’d say Go Big Blue but i’m a Kansas guy so can’t quite make myself do it. Thanks again.

    • Scotty R

      Awesome Griff.
Hey, this is the same style as Please Come Home for Christmas by the Eagles.
So for those learning, you get a two-fer. With a great blues tune and a Christmas tune.
      Take care,

    • Jack Flash Flash

what is the strum pattern for this?

    • tony

as always explained well . i read some of the comments and saw that the Allman brothers did this as well . must have a listen to that . i have been playing a lot in this area looking for ideas . thanks for the input in this area. don`t think it gets enough luv.

      • Roger

if you look up Gary Moore “”Blies for Greeny” (Peter Green tribute… using the Les Paul Peter gave Garry Moore for life…. the entire back ground is played by a string ensemble… maybe 10 instruments? … so no particular guitar background … Garry does about a 7 bar solo… probably the best blues solo I ever heard

    • Terry

I first heard by Gary Morre. Great slow tune to jam over. Thks.

    • John mann

I love Peter Green & this is one of my favorite’s & my goto song to preform at my local jam night! I really liked the way you played the diminished chord, haven’t seen it done that way! Great lesson

    • John Bikadi

      Simply awesome
      Thanx Griff

    • Ira Horowitz

How about a lesson on that opening solo?

    • bb brown

This classic was written by Mertis John, Jr and recorded by his brother Little Willie John in 1955.

My favorite version is by the Allman Bros – here’s the studio track off of Enlightened Rogues.

    • Tabascoblues

    • Keith

Great song! Check out the Gary Moore version, live at Montreaux, 1999. Totally inspiring! Thanks, Griff, for turning us on to this one!

      • Bob S.

I agree…..Gary’s version is SO compelling.

    • jeff

    • Chris

Thanks Griff, big big fan of Peter Green and this is one of my favourites! Any chance of a tutorial for Man of the World? Quite possibly my top fave tune from Greeny……just can seem to get my fingers around that one 🙁

    • Terry

Wow. Right along almost the same lines as the song I’m working out now. Cherry Red (Big Joe Tunner). Done by Dave and Phil Alvin. Lol.Hey your really keep up on your students. Griff. Thks.

Thanks a bunch, Griff. I’ve been practicing this song for a few weeks, and I’ll be doing it at BGU Live, so thanks for setting us up with the band. Still working on the last 16 bars of solo like Peter Green did it. Awesome song.

Your lessons and daily messages are great to use. I don’t know how you make it much simpler than other guitar teachers, but you do! Really appreciate being in your email loop. Many Thanks/

    • jerry palladino

There are a lot of blues songs with a bridge if you count country style blues. Two songs that come to mind are I’ll hold you in my heart, and Now after loving you. Originally country songs but if you listen to the Elvis versions of both, it sure is blues.

    • Tom

Love this song, I’m practicing it a while know. Thanks for making this lesson.

    • Mark d.

I agree with Michael Jones it’s uncanny how you send these videos at the right time love the chord progression keep coming Griff love your stuff

My favourite rendition of this classic song is by Gary Moore. I just love the passion he gives it. So many versions from Montreux too. Goose bumps….
